Small Town On The Arkansas River In Bighorn Sheep Canyon - Fremont County, CO

One of those little towns you drive through quickly ...
August 3, 2011 - Bill Oliver and I went for a drive in Bighorn Sheep Canyon and Fremont County. We ended up in the small and historic town of Wellsville, Colorado. Although most drive by without noticing the homes and rock quarry that comprise Wellsville, it may have been bustling when the railroad was a primary mode of transportation.

Of course, the Arkansas River runs through and this is a popular spot for whitewater rafting, kayaking, camping and fly fishing. Below are my five photos and a video of Wellsville. We had a good time! :)

Parked on the edge of Highway 50. Bighorn Sheep Canyon is a very scenic canyon between Canon City and Salida.

A beautiful photo of the Arkansas River. Many of the common whitewater rafting runs happen down river at Texas Creek and the Royal Gorge, but it's still common to see private boaters on this river section. Also, it's rare that I don't see some fly fishers during the non-winter months.

Beautiful rock walls as we drove on Highway 50 east toward Wellsville.

I do kiss a cactus at 4:02. It hurt, but it was so worth it! :)

The next year, my friend Brian was biking across America. I made a video of his ride from Salida to Cotopaxi.
