Watergate Hotel
September 23-25, 1994

I left New Jersey on a Friday morning -- so early that it was dark when I was on the road. I took the New Jersey Turnpike south, crossed Delaware and drove through Maryland. My first destination was Washington, DC. I was searching for the U.S. Holocaust Museum when I got lost ...

Watergate Hotel

... I turned off a highway and found myself in front of the Watergate Hotel. Now, being a guy who had just earned a B.A. in Political Science, I thought it was so neat to be on the grounds of this political landmark. I walked around the grounds and photographed a manmade waterfall. I sat in the lobby. I was tempted to ask what the rate was for a single hotel room, but I didn't have the nerve to ask. Silly me. :)

No pictures inside the museum. Back then, the museum was relatively new and had opened in 1993. The exhibits were touching. Many people were in tears. In fact, I wrote in my journal that "you could feel a deep and heavy sadness among everyone."

Adjacent is a museum card and my ticket.

Vietnam Wall

Vietnam Wall

I visited the Vietnam Wall.

So many names on those walls. RIP :(

Washington Monument.
Lincoln Memorial The Lincoln Memorial.

Leaving Washington, I drove to the Interstate 81 corridor in Virginia and stayed at a motel in Stanton. Across the motel was a pool hall, and I shot pool for hours.

Blue Ridge Parkway Scenery The next day, I drove on the Blue Ridge Parkway and enjoyed the scenery as I went toward Tennessee.

At the time, I must remind you that I had lived in New Jersey for my entire life, and so it was a big deal to drive on a mountain road with sharp switchbacks.

In fact, I was stunned at the sight of being above clouds! (Adjacent Photo)

Johnson City, Tennessee

In the afternoon, I arrived at a cousin's home in Johnson City. My mother has many cousins from a large Italian family, and the Periconi family generously let me stay with them. They're good people! I stayed with Paul and Ann from Saturday afternoon to Monday morning.

I only have two pictures from the visit. One has Paul Periconi mowing his backyard lawn. They have a pretty view of greenery and hills from their home.

Secondly, that's me standing by my 1991 Honda CRX.

I look so young.
I had short hair.
And I miss that car!

Up to this point, I had already been through parts of Virginia and east Tennessee, but as I left Johnson City, I would be taking on unchartered land. The traveler in me was excited.

Interstate 40 Tennessee When Interstate 40 and 75 split, I headed toward Chattanooga.
Tennessee River I believe this is the Tennessee River.
Chattanooga Railroad I stopped in Chattanooga and visited the Tennessee Valley Railroad and Museum. I had arrived late and they were closing soon, but I did capture this picture.
