I took my time driving from Lake Charles, Louisiana to Austin, Texas on a Saturday.

Here's an oh-so-amazing photo of the Texas state sign on the shoulder of Interstate 10.

Road Trip Photo Amazing to think you could drive 857 miles and remain in the same state!

San Marcos, TX Rodeo

Texas Rodeo

Two photos of the rodeo.

I arrived in Austin and stayed at a hostel. This would be the first of many visits to hostels in the USA; they saved me money and they're such a great way to make connections with fellow travelers.

Within minutes of my arrival, I was invited to a rodeo in San Marcos. I went with people who were also traveling around the country, all of them foreigners: two from South Africa, one from Norway and two from Great Britian.

Margo, The Australian Extraordinaire

I recall having many conversations with guests at the hostel, but one particular girl stood out.

This is Margo from Australia, another traveler wandering around the USA. We did some things in Austin together, and on our last night, my journal indicated that we played an invigorating game of Trivia Pursuit. :)

The great thing about Margo: To this day, Margo and I keep in touch! She wrote me a letter about five years later, and then we've kept in touch through email and Facebook.

Texas State Capitol
I believe this is the State Capitol Building in Austin.
I did have one thing to do on Monday. I visited the Social Work Department at the University of Texas. Everyone was friendly, but I got the sense competition for this program was very high. Only 1%-5% of applicants are accepted.

In retrospect, I'm so glad that I never became a Longhorn. Years later, I would become a fanatical Arkansas Razorbacks person ... a huge improvement over Texas, no doubt. :)

In the end, I wouldn't start graduate school until 1999, and I got an M.A. in Counseling at Denver Seminary.

Behind the hostel was this river.
Austin Texas Taxi Cab Not sure why I snapped this picture of a taxi driver. :)

West Texas

After two full days in Austin, I was ready to move on. I drove west through Johnson City (LBJ's hometown) and took Interstate 10 toward El Paso. My plan was to stay in El Paso or continue into New Mexico. Either way, it would be an all day drive.

Texas Scenery Pretty mountains as the scenery became arid.
West Texas Desert I had made it to the the glorious desert.
