Volcano Hikes in Petroglyph National Monument
(Albuquerque, New Mexico)

A Nifty Little Hike on Albuquerque's West Side
The extinct volcanoes in Petroglyph National Monument are an enjoyable and scenic hike in Albuquerque. From Artisco Vista Boulevard on the west side, there's a trailhead with clearly marked pathways that lead to three volcano sites named JA, Black and Vulcan. (Vulcan is the highest at elevation 6033 feet.) Definitely go and enjoy the trails!

The "three bumps" of these retired volcanoes can be seen to the west in many parts of Albuquerque. Here's a shot from Paseo Del Norte.

Vulcan Volcano, Vulcan Hill or simply "The Vulcan." Whatever you call it, this small peak deserves your admiration.

Petroglyph National Monument, NM

June 2, 2015 - The hike began at the trailhead in Petroglyph National Monument off of Artisco Vista Boulevard. At the time of this writing, there is no fee to park a vehicle.
JA Volcano The closest hill is the JA volcano site.
JA Volcano It's an easy hike to the top of JA.

This is the view facing north toward Black Volcano, our next destination.

Approaching the top of Black Volcano.

Among the three, this hill does have more black rocks on the summit.

Facing east, one has a wonderful view of Albuquerque and the Sandia Mountains.

I zoomed-in as best as I could on downtown Albuquerque for the second photo.

These hills are probably not as interesting as Capulin National Monument (with its dramatic topography), but if you're an extinct volcano enthuiast, these are worth a visit.
