0.5 Mile Trail to Miracle Rock Near Grand Junction and Glade Park in Western Colorado

Oh yes, this rock should be considered a miracle ...
Miracle Rock is one of many unique rock structures in western Colorado that is worthy of a visit. It's balanced on a long and narrow base that makes its name so fitting. The Miracle Rock Recreation Area offers a picnic area at the trailhead, and a well-marked 0.5 mile trail leads to the rock. If you enjoy getting away from the crowds, Miracle Rock is probably a good option due to its remote location in western Mesa County, Colorado. (On my midday visit on a Saturday in April, there was only one family from Missouri who were picnicing at the trailhead, and I saw no one on the trail.)

Directions: From Glade Park, Colorado -- that's west of Colorado National Monument and Grand Junction -- travel west on DS Road. Then make a left (south) on 9 8/10 Road. Go for about one mile and the parking area and trailhead is on your left. You can also search for "Miracle Rock Colorado" on Google maps.

April 6, 2013 - At the trailhead, a sign notes that the trail is 500 yards long. I think it's somewhat longer -- more like a 0.5 mile hike one way. However, it's an easy hike on a well-marked trail.

Be aware that this is an isolated region. There was no cell phone service with my Verizon phone. Carry lots of water. The nearest place with services is the Glade Park General Store.

No more than a half mile of hiking and then you'll see Miracle Rock on the right.

Notice the second picture. Somehow the curves of the rock and contours of the ground are defying gravity! :o)

The scenery up there is pretty.

By the way, there is a picnic area at the trailhead, but if you're in the mood for a picnic, having your picnic at Miracle Rock. And for that matter, this would be a great place to bring a folding chair and book, or for an artist to bring his or her easel, canvas and paint supplies.

After I came down, I continued a short distance on 9 8/10 Road to visit the Potholes of the Little Dolores River.

Miracle Rock (left) can be seen from the road, although it doesn't appear as magnificent from below.
