Midland Hill - Our Hike Via The Northeast Ridge

An Afternoon Hike of a Small Peak Located East of Buena Vista, Colorado - January 31, 2009

Midland Hill Midland Hill! Sometimes locals in Buena Vista refer to the summit of this mountain as "Sleeping Indian Mountain," but every map I have names this small mountain ridge east of Buena Vista as Midland Hill. The adjacent snowy photo shows Midland Hill on 12/21/08 (see photos), and today we stood on the highest point in this ridge, the peak on the right.

I have summited this mountain twice via the well-maintained trail, and you can see those photos here (2008) and here (2006). This time, I desired to climb the peak a different way. I make no suggestions - everything on this page simply describes what I did: We parked off of C.R. 376A southeast-east of Midland Hill's summit. We walked along the draw between the summit and the unnamed "knob" (alt. 9,124 feet) to the northeast ridge. Then we connected with the trail near the top. I include a link on the left to the topographical map I used.

Special thanks to Derrick and Mr. B (right photo) for joining me on this hike. I think we had a good time on an unusually warm January day. It was in the 40's ... that's just crazy for this time of year!

All the best,
Steve

P.S. You can see a list of hikes I've done in the Buena Vista area here: Buena Vista Hikes.

Chief The Dog

Chief The Dog

The beginning of the hike.

Look at these two great pictures of Chief. By the way, Chief has a fan group on Facebook. Just do a search for "chief+dog" and you should be able to find it! :)

Also, here are my YouTube videos with Chief:

  • Snow
  • Colorado Trail
  • We trudged through plenty of snow that probably doesn't not receive a lot of sunlight.
    At The Summit

There I am ... standing at the summit. (Altitude 9,556 feet)

    Mt. Princeton

The views are the prettiest toward the east.

TOP: 14er Mt. Columbia. (The view to the northwest)

MIDDLE: The town of Buena Vista in the foreground with 14er Mt. Yale in the middle.

BOTTOM: Mt. Antero and Mt. Princeton. The prison is in the foreground.

Buffalo Peaks The view to the north of the Buffalo Peaks.
Johnson Village, CO I zoomed-in on Johnson Village. :)
Midland Hill, CO Once again, I'd like to give special thanks to Derrick and Mr. B. I like the shot of them pointing at the mountains ... we could see Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive toward the north, and Mt. Ouray and the Sangre De Cristo Mountains toward the south. Nice views!

Two photos of the eastern area known as the "Four Mile" area.
