Linkins Lake - A Hike Near Independence Pass, CO

Linkins Lake, elevation 12008 feet
Linkins Lake near Independence Pass makes for an excellent easy hiking choice. Whether you're just driving through and want some exercise, you're a beginner who has little experience hiking in the mountains, or you're a big fan of high-elevation lakes, Linkins Lake should be on your radar. The trail begins at the first switchback west of Independence Pass in Pitkin County, where there's a dirt area for parking. The trail is straightforward and approximately 0.5 miles one way. Happy trails!

Linkins Lake, CO

July 3, 2015 - Coming down Independence Pass on the Pitkin County (west side) of the divide, this was my view from Highway 82. You can see the switchback and I put an arrow for where Linkins Lake lies.

You can see everything in this region on the National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map #127 which is titled "Aspen/Independence Pass".

Linkins Lake Trail The Linkins Lake Trail. There is one turnoff for the Lost Man Lake Trail which leads to Independence Lake, but you'll go left.
Colorado Wildflowers Pretty wildflowers.
Linkins Lake Trail The trail climbs. At one point, I turned back to capture the view of the Highway 82 road cut and scenery. The Roaring Fork River begins a short distance upstream and is a young, babbling creek over here.

This place reminded me of Lost Lake in Chaffee County or Kite Lake in Park County, which sits at the base of Mount Democrat.

Also, there are nice 13ers and 12ers nearby that are accessible with 2WD vehicles. They are Peak 13500', Twining Peak, Geissler Mountain and Point 12812'.

Lake Thawing in July There were still patches of ice and snow on the top of the lake. Snow in July is sublime. It is the greatest thing in the world!

A normal video at Linkins Lake.

I'd say the area isn't too shabby.
