Highway of Legends - Stonewall, Cuchara & La Veta, CO
State Highway 12 is the Highway of Legends
The tourism promotion in Las Animas and Huerfano counties make a
big deal about the Highway of Legends Scenic Byway. With State Highway 12 as the key road,
it can be done as the loop with Trinidad,
Stonewall, Cuchara, La Veta and Walsenburg on the route. On this page are some of my photos from today's drive.
Honestly, the most exciting parts of the drive are on Highway 12 through the towns of Stonewall, Cuchara and La Veta.
The Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range comes into view while headed west near Weston.
July 4, 2016 - From Trinidad, drive west on Highway 12.
You'll pass the Trinidad Reservoir (a state park) and continue through Cokedale, Segundo and Weston.
Then the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range comes into better view.
I stopped at the general store in Stonewall and bought a t-shirt. I will be wearing this a lot. :)
By the way, did you know I made a video promoting tourism in Stonewall? Watch... :p)
TOP: I passed Monument Lake and got a shot that included the Spanish Peaks in the background.
SECOND: Then there's another lake that I'm pretty sure is named North Lake, but don't hold me to it. Highway 12 wraps around much of the lake.
I'd think these spots would be excellent choices for fishing.
Heading north towards Cuchara Pass.
At Cuchara Pass, I photographed this "Highway of Legends Scenic Byway" sign.
If you take County Road 364 at Cuchara Pass about 0.5 miles, you'll reach an overlook, named the John Farley Overlook.
Those homes in the distance are part of the village of Cuchara. A commercial ski area was once in operation in the region. Interestingly, a local told me
that skiiers used to come to this very spot and ski downward all the way into Cuchara!
I made a 180-degree video at the overlook.
The wildflowers were teeming at Cuchara Pass.
At a hairpin turn, I headed west on a dirt road to Blue Lake and Bear Lake.
I investigated Trinchera Peak, a 13er
in the Sangre de Cristo Range, and found the trailhead. I'm hopeful to hike this mountain soon. :)
