(Photos Of A Snowy Road Leading To The Arkansas River - January 26, 2008)
It was one of those bright and sunny afternoon where I had to get out for
awhile. Seeking to go anywhere I've never been before, I drove on Hecla Junction Road, a hilly dirt road that
leads to Hecla Junction, a common portage area along the Arkansas River.
Heading up a hill, the views of Mt. Princeton (top),
Mt. Antero and Mt. Shavano (bottom) were pretty nice.
It's been a really snowy winter!
Here some other snow pages in the past twelve months:
A view looking west at the high point on the road. These mountains east of Browns Canyon get little
respect being situated so close to larger ranges like the Sangre De Cristos,
the Sawatch Range and the Mosquito Range.
One more view looking back at Mt. Princeton with a lovely snowy road. :)
And here it is ... the Arkansas River at Hecla Junction.
A significant part of the river's edge was iced over and covered in snow, and I did dare to walk out on there. :)
If you ever have river rafted or kayaked between Buena Vista and Salida,
there is a good chance you are acquainted with this spot.
I smoked a cigar and walked around a bit. I also captured a
picture of the sign showing various portages and rapids along the river.
Here are my other pages from this particular portion of Chaffee County:
