High Dune (8629 Feet) - Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

A Special Hike In The San Luis Valley
High Dune is probably the premier hike among the dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park. From the base at Medano Creek, there is a 700 feet elevation gain and it's approximately 1.5 miles to the summit. High Dune is not the highest dune -- that distinction goes to Star Dune which is another mile to the west. This is a great hike, though. From the summit, one has a panoramic view of the dunes, the Sangre De Cristo Range and even the mountains afar to the west. Just do this hike. It's a fun one. You can learn more about this national park on my main page, Great Sand Dunes National Park, and more things to do on my San Luis Valley page.

November 28, 2014 - My first photo was taken as I traveled east from Mosca. I loved the desert with the Sangre De Cristo Mountains in the distance. So pretty!

Great Sand Dunes Hike

Mike Vernon, my hiking partner, joined me on this outing. There he is posing beside a deep gully on the dunes. He also got a photo of me as I worked up the curved ridge.

Our best hikes in 2014:
  • Mount Shavano
  • Peak 13078'
  • Mount Democrat
  • Great Sand Dunes Trail Footsteps in the sand.

High Dune I ran down the side of High Dune. A photo looking back up. :)
Medano Creek, Colorado Once the temperature warmed by midday, Medano Creek was running.

Lastly, I'd like to pay homage to Mount Herard (elevation 13345') on the left. Mike and I intend to climb that mountain next summer. Wish us the best!
