(A Visit To The Highest Point In Florida - Altitude 345 Feet) - March 18, 2008
Florida's highest point is Britton Hill, located in the unincorporated town of Lakewood, Florida
in north Walton County. The high point is located in a park (Lakewood Park) along Highway 285.
Directions from much of Florida: Take I-10 to Highway 331 North (exit 85) in DeFuniak Springs. Continue north on
Highway 331 and make a right on Highway 285. The park is on the left before you reach the Alabama state line.
Most information about state high points have this spot listed as Britton Hill, although
signage merely points to the area as Lakewood Park.
At 345 feet, Britton Hill is the lowest high point among all 50 U.S. states!
There I was, smoking a cigar and enjoying myself.
I was the only person in the park during my afternoon visit.
There is also a gazebo in the park for picnicing.
This park that includes Britton Hill is a miniscule slope among a fairly flat terrain with just
modest "rolling hills" in the region. I did capture this pretty view across the
street of open fields and trees.
There are a few hiking trails that begin at this park, making it a
nice outdoor option for those living in Walton County.
I was staying at a motel near the airport in Jacksonville, Florida,
and being that I had a car rental and nothing to do all day, I opted to drive
310 miles each way far into the western Florida panhandle to reach Britton Hill.
Adjacent are three pictures along Interstate 10 including a Tallahassee water tower (left),
the DeFuniak Springs exit sign (right) and a shot I really like as I cruised westward on I-10 (bottom).
Lastly, I thought I'd make a plug for Gao's Chinese Buffet in Florala, Alabama,
located not far from Florida's high point at the junction of Highway 331 and Alabama state highway 54. The
food was decent and the prices were reasonable; It was a great place to dine to celebrate reaching the summit
of Florida's high point! YAY! :)
