(My Hike At Mission Trails Regional Park In San Diego, California) - January 24, 2007

Mission Trails Regional Park
Cowles Mountain
I have been in San Diego for a few days now and as a Coloradoan, I was really itching to stand on top of a mountain. I chose to hike Cowles Mountain, the tallest peak in the city of San Diego, standing at 1,592 feet at the summit. The 1.5 mile trail is clearly marked and great for training, leisurely hikes and taking in the scenery around San Diego. I began at the main trailhead (adjacent photos) at the junction of Navajo Road and Golfcrest Drive.

This is not a long and necessary rigorous hike for Colorado standards, and in fact, I reached the summit in just 42 minutes. Still, there were many pretty views of the San Diego area and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Cowles Mountain I zoomed-in on a sign. I must say the Mission Trails Regional Park of San Diego is quite an impressive area with trails and open space that is untouched by San Diego development.

Now the rest of these photos were taken at the summit of Cowles Mountain. The nicest views were undoubtedly towards the west, where one can see downtown San Diego and the Pacific coast. Unfortunately, the sun was towards the west, which made these pictures really poor in quality. I "fought off the sun" with my hand and the pictures make the view appear much darker than it really was. Suggestion: If you are seeking great pictures towards San Diego and the ocean, go up there early in the morning! ;)

Shana also captured some great sunset photos west of the summit here: Cowles Mountain Sunset.

Note to my Colorado followers: If you are just checking in, I have not abandoned Colorado! I am merely on a 4-5 week trip in which I have been spending time in southern New Mexico, southern Arizona and San Diego. I was in need of a roadtrip! ;)

This is my first picture collection in California, and here are my previous pages from my trip:

We are heading to the San Diego Zoo on Friday ... It should be fun! ;)
