|Biking Poncha Pass
Poncha Pass is a great road bike climb from Poncha Springs. In 7.5 miles, you ascend 1500 feet on Highway 285 with decent shoulder.
As a resident of Chaffee County, sometimes I prefer Poncha Pass because it's less intense than
Cottonwood Pass or Indepenence Pass, but
you still get a great workout.
Now, you can bike from the San Luis Valley side, where the elevation gain is less from
Villa Grove. If you're ambitious, you could do a round trip from Salida/Poncha Springs to the general store at Villa Grove (where you can
stock up on supplies or have lunch), and then return. Whatever you do, happy cycling! :)
