Biking Poncha Pass - Poncha Springs, Colorado

Biking Poncha Pass
Poncha Pass is a great road bike climb from Poncha Springs. In 7.5 miles, you ascend 1500 feet on Highway 285 with decent shoulder. As a resident of Chaffee County, sometimes I prefer Poncha Pass because it's less intense than Monarch Pass, Cottonwood Pass or Indepenence Pass, but you still get a great workout.

Now, you can bike from the San Luis Valley side, where the elevation gain is less from Villa Grove. If you're ambitious, you could do a round trip from Salida/Poncha Springs to the general store at Villa Grove (where you can stock up on supplies or have lunch), and then return. Whatever you do, happy cycling! :)

As I was coming down, I stopped to photograph the beautiful view of Mount Ouray (13971').

At Poncha Pass, the view to the south of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains is spectacular!

It was windy up there.
