Bike Poncha Pass
(Photos Of My Bike Ride From Poncha Springs to Poncha Pass) - May 3, 2007
 |
With the weather warm, I have been road biking
almost daily and today I began my bike ride to Poncha Pass in the town of
Poncha
Springs, approximately eight miles south of the summit. |
 |
Here are a couple of photos as I biked uphill on Highway 285 including
the friendly biker (bottom) who passed by me.
Folks, do not take this pass lightly. From Poncha Springs,
it is a fairly steep 7.5 miles to Poncha Pass with very few flat or downhill stretches.
The advantage of this pass is there are wide shoulders all along the highway. |

Arrival at Poncha Pass!
It was fairly cloudy with rainstorms happening way out
towards the Sawatch Mountains, but I
did manage to capture the view (bottom) of the northern Sangre De Cristo
Mountains on the southern side of Poncha Pass. The pass serves as the
dividing point between the Arkansas River and Rio Grande watersheds.
Here are some of pages in this area:
Bonanza, Villa Grove, Turret Ghost Town
UFO Watchtower, Saguache, Great Sand Dunes
Salida, Monarch Pass, "S" Mountain
Poncha Pass Drive, Mini-Golf in Salida |
 |
The clouds and sun were directly above Mt. Ouray, but I "fought off" the sun as best as possible to show you this beautiful peak. |
 |
On the way down the pass ...
An old mining shift near the roadside. |
 |
Two more scenery photos heading down the pass and the Chaffee County welcome sign. "Now This Is Colorado!" is a very fitting slogan for this area. ;)
