Arizona and New Mexico Road Trip

The Southwest In All Her Glory
January 9-17, 2015 - A week into the New Year, a road trip was in order to restore my soul. With a window of time to get away from Colorado, I opted to visit New Mexico and Arizona. On this page are some of my photos and links to three hikes.

Hikes

Wasson Peak - A wonderful hike in the Tucson Mountains. 3.3 miles (one way) from the Kings Canyon Trailhead to Wasson Peak.
Sugarloaf Mountain, Arizona Sugarloaf Mountain - A small mountain with beautiful views in Chiricahua National Monument.
Pusch Peak, AZ Pusch Peak - A tough but rewarding climb in the Oro Valley / north Tucson area.

Shauna and Steve

New Mexico

My first stop was to see Shauna in Espanola. This girl was one of two excellent proofreaders of my book, Under a Triumphant Sky. She worked so hard for me, reading through my manuscript twice. What a friend!

There we are in front of Lotaburger, and yes, she was wearing pajamas. :)

Burrito with Red & Green Chile Burrito with Red & Green Chile A breakfast burrito with green and red chile at Lotaburger in Espanola. Mmmmm.

Also, a green chile cheeseburger at a Lotaburger in Deming.

Red Chile Strips Red chile chips. These were good!

After crashing on Shauna's couch, I headed south on Interstate 25 into southern New Mexico.

San Antonio, New Mexico

I stopped in the little town of San Antonio, which was on the route of my 2008 bike across USA trip. Sweet memories!

At the San Antonio General Store, I sold a copy of my memoir to the owner. (In Chapter 9, I mention my experiences in the store.)

Continental Divide in New Mexico Pulled over on Interstate 10 on the Continental Divide. This was on my way back. :)

Arizona Sunset

Arizona

Arizona sunsets are amazing. Here's one from that first evening as I drove on Interstate 10 in Cochise County, headed to my motel in Willcox.

Two photos as I traveled on Sunday morning to Chiricahua National Monument.

Do you see the "two heads" that comprise of Dos Cabezas mountain? :)

I love these images of all the cacti and plants.
Tucson Sunset On the second evening, I captured the sunset from Speedway in Tucson.
Nogales, AZ One morning, my friend Joel gave me a tour the U.S./Mexico border fence in Nogales. We went on a dirt road outside of town ...

... and stood right there! That was fun. :)

Nimbus Brewery in Tucson, AZ Lunch with Joel and his fiance Barbara at Nimbus Brewery in Tucson. I like that place!
Waters Tanks U.S. Mexico Border Joel works for Humane Borders (www.humaneborders.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to keeping water tanks in key areas where illegal crossers tend to hike.

Regardless of your views about the border and illegal immigration matters, it makes sense to have water tanks. It's merciful and humane. NOBODY (not border patrol, private property owners, or anyone else) wants to encounter dead bodies in the desert ... and too often they do.

Green Chile Quesadilla

Green Chile Quesadilla

Dinner with Elka at El Charro Cafe. Considering my friend is camera shy, it's probably best that I accidently cut off her face. :p)

There's a better shot of our beautiful green chile quesadilla that we shared. Mmmmm!

I only snapped one Colorado image on the road trip -- while I was in the San Luis Valley and returning to Buena Vista. I like it! :)
